The best laid plans...

jamon

I'd intended this month to be about British food and all the good stuff you can lay your hands on in this green and pleasant land. So, it was with surprise that I found myself in a very cold and foggy Madrid on Wednesday afternoon ogling a vast array of cured hams, chorizos and lomos. I was in a pretty typical butchers in the barrio Salamanca of Madrid and yet I was confronted with the best cured meats that Spain has to offer, meats that you'd have to search out in the thin air of stratospherically expensive food shops in the UK and US. Part of the reason for the paucity of posts this week has been a ludicrously busy schedule for various reasons, so finding good things to eat was not high on the agenda, of course that all changed when confronted with the ruby red flesh of cured pata negra. This is Spanish food at its purest for me, a glass of fino, some good bread and plate of jamon. From the darkest rarified "jabugo", made from black acorn fed pigs and cured for over 2 years to lighter pink everyday eating Serrano, cured for a year, stuffed into a sandwhich with some cheese this is food to make you moan with pleasure. The picture is 100g of jamon de Jabugo which I had the guy cut for me to eat there and then whilst the rest was vacuum sealed ready for Christmas day.
Aside from this minor blip I'll try and stay on topic from now on, I promise. Well, maybe...

Hehe! Sorry about that Sam! The only thing I'm annoyed about is I was in such a rush and preoccupied with getting my jamon that I forgot to take a picture of the butchers which was a marvel!
